8 | AMGEN TOUR OF CALIFORNIA | OFFICIAL 2019 PROGRAM O n behalf of all the participating Golden State destinations, it is a privilege to once again open our doors and roads to the incredible athletes, spectators, sponsors and volunteers who bring this signature event to life each year. “America’s Greatest Race” has earned the distinction for a reason: Nowhere else in the world can one experience such unparalleled diversity of geography and climate over the course of seven electrifying days. The Amgen Tour of California acts as a virtual postcard from California, providing a unique opportunity to show itself off to cyclists and adventure seekers around the world. 2019’s race spans over 750 miles of the Golden State’s varied terrain, highways and byways crossing through 13 host communities, all of which have worked diligently to make this year’s race the best yet. We are also grateful for the tireless work of dedicated race administrators and countless volunteers that make it possible to elevate the stature of this only-in-California event. The Amgen Tour of California is a cornerstone of the state’s competitive spirit, and events like this are essential to the local tourism economies on which our communities depend. This year the 120,000th hotel room was booked since the race’s inception in 2006 – a testament to the economic impact of events such as this. In highlighting the incredible natural bounty of the state in our beyond-the-gateway host destinations, we can instill a sense of wonder and yearning to viewers – both here and abroad – to come experience these locations themselves. So gather, cheer and celebrate as we begin another exciting race across California.
